CPP problem in installing LAME from source?

I'm using Ubuntu Hoary.

I downloaded LAME from the sourceforge website and unzipped it.

When I did "./configure", the end error message was:

Code:
configure: error: C++ preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check
See 'config.log' for more details.
I actually successfully installed this from source on my previous Ubuntu Hoary installation on the older hard drive.

So, what's the issue? Why can't I install LAME?

It should be in the directory you ran ./configure from.
