courier pop3 0.45 login problem

I have installed courier on my server with imap running fine. It authenticates against MySQL. The problem is that pop3 won't login whereas imap logs in fine.
This is what happens,

ash@maitre:~> telnet localhost 110
Trying ::1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
+OK Hello there.
user admin
+OK Password required.
pass ***********
Connection closed by foreign host.

No matter what i put into the user and pass commands, i obtain the same result. There are no messages in the logs apart from the fact that some supplied a username and password, but thats it.

I think the pop3 server has trouble communicating to mysql and therfore dies, but this is wierd since imap logs in with no problem ands they use the same authdaemon service,

I also had the effect under courier 0.42.

Anyone experienced the same problems? Any help would be very much appreciated.
