I never had any luck with minicom or wvdial.... although, minicom was useful in that I could test the modem while i was troubleshooting.
What distro are you using? The easiest and simplest route for me was to use pppsetup with Slackware. It will ask you some questions and create a script to run. Type "ppp-go" in console and it should connect. It's really easy and light. Obviously, you have to have ppp installed for this to work.
Distribution: Emacs and linux is its device driver(Slackware,redhat)

wvdial is easy to use first run wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf as root then edit /etc/wvdial.conf to add your isp phone and user name you can add multiple isp s under the same account
