configuring the samba server


how to configure the samba server

i need to know how to configure it for file and printer sharing

You need to edit the /etc/samba/smb.conf configuration file. There should be an example in the same directory, look for /etc/samba/smb.conf.example, it is a very good example usually, I suggest that you copy this one as "smb.conf" and make your edit in it, instead of starting a new config.

"man smb.conf" and "man samba" could also help to find out what all these things mean.

If you want, there is also some tools to write a basic smb.conf for you, like "swat".

to share a file you can try this conf:

netbios name = XXXX #put heer a name of server
security = share
encrypt passwords = yes
workgroup = XXXX #name of the group
socket options = TCP_NODELAY
interfaces = 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 # Change to your interface adres
os level = 199
local master = yes


## Put your shares heer

[htdocs]
path = /var/www/localhost/htdocs #In this exampel i share my htdocs apache file
browseable = yes
writeable = yes
public = yes
