configuring git-1.6.0 and curl-7.18.2

I need to get source code from a git repository

So, the first hurdle is getting the source using git. I don't have
it, and have never heard of it.

I downloaded curl (mandrivas old one gives compile errors
building git-1.6.0) and I installed a new curl with prefix=/usr so I overwrite the old curl.

I downloaded and installed git, and initialised

git config --user.name = and user.email=

Then, according to an example with ntfs in http://www.linux-ntfs.org/doku.php?id=howto:git

I just type

git clone http://repo.org.cz/w/microdia.git microdia

I get loads of errors to do with html,
It says
error: Protocol '<a href="html:' not supported or disabled in libcurl
I figure that I go back to
curl, this time I do configure --enable-http
make uninstall, make clean, make, make install.

go back to git-1.6.0 directory
configure --with-curl --prefix=/usr
make clean
make
make install

however I get the same errors as before

error: Protocol '<a href="html:' not supported or disabled in libcurl

is still there.

I check curl with find files, and they are all new, I don't seem to be accidentally picking up some old version. Same with git. So
I must be doing something wrong, but I now at a loss to see what it could be. Surely the --enable-http on the curl configuration
should have fixed it?
