I have some DVDs created with LiteOn LVW-5045 (Digital Video Recorder). The problem of this device is that the VOB files are created using raw data without any kind of compression. In other words, a movie of 2 hours needs 2 DVDs of 4.5G!!! A very waste of DVDs!!!
I would like to extract the VOB files, compress them and recreate VOB files.
Is there a tool for GNU/Linux with provides such a functionality?
may you can trigger your dvd-recorder to record in a less-quality-mode, so you don't need so much space on a dvd.
personally i also use a dvd-recorder (recording in sp-mode -> 2 hours video on a 4,5 GB-DVD) to write on dvd-rws. afterwards i use tmpgenc dvd-author on my (win)-pc to get mpg out of the vob-files. this mpgs i cut and write vob files back to dvd-r.
converting on a pc is a possible way to go. but i would check if the dvd-recorder can recorde in different quality-modes.
you are right. I can set the recorder to a lower quality. The problem, is I have to know before I record a movie, how long does it will take. Once recorded, the quality can not be changed.
I don't have a Windows PC, therefore the tmpgenc won't work for me.
