Compressing files

I have this file: lnx_920_disk1.cpio
I want to make it into: lnx_920_disk1.cpio.gz

What is the command to do this? Obviously including the switches.

Okay I figured it out, gzip is for compressing files and gunzip is for decompressing them. I was trying to use gunzip to compress the file.
