Compressing MP3's

I have a collection of MP3s I've ripped on my computer and i would like to put them on a CD for my new MP3 CD player, thereby fitting many of my albums on one. Anyway the problem is i ripped them in a high bit-rate format but I would like them smaller for the CD so i can get more on. Does anyone know of a program that will compress my MP3's for me(BASH or GUI I'm not bothered).
