zipping/compressing folders and files

say i have a folder, named "program" and it has files in it. If i wanted to add the folder "program" and all of the files inside of it to what would be the command. Also how could i add it to program.tar.gz??? I have read the zip and tar man pages but i cant figure it out?

To make a compressed tarball type tar -czvf program.tar.gz /<path to program>.
