Competing noises in gnome on SuSE 9.1

I have recently (past half hour) successfully installed SuSE 9.1 on my IBM TP X21.

Everything is playing nicely and I'm a happy camper, but the sound events in Gnome are acting weird. I know what they're supposed to sound like, but it's like Gnome is trying to play another sound file on top of every sound. It sounds kind of like a beep or a bell. So, for every sound, the sound starts our normal and eends with a high "boop".

Anyone else encoutered this an have any suggestions?

OK. So I just played with this some more. It looks like the sound artifact that keeps getting tagged onto the end is from the last sound file that got played, maybe?
