Changing board Colors in Xboard/Gnuchess

Im using Xboard 4.2.7 with Suse 10.1

I'd like to be able to change the default board colours to orange and brown.
The man page of xboard gives options

-lightSquareColor #color
-darkSquareColor #color

If I try to start xboard with these options I get an unrecognised argument error.
Output from terminal below:

anc@orac:~> xboard '-lightSquareColor #967551 -darkSquareColor #ffa341'
xboard: unrecognized argument -lightSquareColor #967551 -darkSquareColor #ffa341

Should these options be included in an xsession or xinit file somewhere? If yes, can anyone give me an example?
Thanks in advance

P.S. I can get xboard to use other chesss engines e.g. xboard -fcp phalanx just cant change
board colours.
