change gnome screen resolution

so far i always used gnome-display properties to change the screen resolution. but because i want to write i shell script where i want to:
.)change screen ressolution
.)enable tv out
.) play a movie

im searching for a option to change my screen resolution with comman line options. i already tried to play around with gnome-display-properties on the commmand line but somehow i dont understand what i should fill in for the various options.

Can anybody give me advice how to change my screen resolution with gnome-display-properties from the command line?
