Centos 6.5+Gnome Desktop: active icons taskbar missing

Hi Guys,

had an issue with nautilus spawning 1000s of copies and then dying.
Ended up removing and re-installing it.
As a side effect it seems, the taskbar that normally shows icons for each running terminal, browser etc etc has disappeared.
I've still got the main toolbar/taskbar that links to the menus and also has the fast launch icons, but I really miss the other one.
Every time I iconize eg a terminal, it disappears (although I can see it via alt-tab).

Anyone know how to put the bar back?

i would reinstall the whole desktop
for gmome2
Code:
su -
yum groupremove "General Purpose Desktop"
reboot
then in int3

Code:
yum groupinstall "General Purpose Desktop" "Graphical Administration Tools"

now if you also have xfce or kde4 installed it will be a bit easier to reinstall Gnome2

if only the lower "panel" is missing
r-click the top panel and select " new panel"

the new one "should be the bottom one

Well, created a new panel ok, but its blank.
Does anyone know how to tell it to show icons for active terminals, FF etc and workspaces & trash icon ie the usual?
I guess I can live with the 'wrong' panel as the 'upper' panel.

I'd rather not re-install the whole desktop if I can avoid it.
I've got an important thing coming up soon that I need this PC for; I don't want to risk a broken system.

it is possible that gnome-panel is messed up from reinstalling Nautilus

you have already renamed a few of the "dot" files ? right

like
~/.gnome2
~/.config
~/.gconf

and relogged in

If " Applications / Places / System" is missing
that is the "menu bar"

there are TWO different ones
under " add to panel"
there is "menu bar" and Main menu"

Menu Bar is the normal one
