cdparanoia problem in Slackware 10.1...

When ever I try to install cdparanoia (any version), it always makes Slackware freeze for a few seconds at seemingly random times. At first I couldn't figure out why all of a sudden my computer would just freeze, but one time when it happened I pressed 'Ctrl-Alt-F1' to bring me back to my console (I am running KDE when these freezes occur) and there were all these messages from cdparanoia saying that it is checking all of these different types of CD protocols for drives that I don't even have installed in my computer. Is there anyway that I can stop this from doing checking all the time? Because, I want to use MPlayer and a few other apps that use cdparanoia's libraries. I have even tried erasing everything that cdparanoia installs (such as the binaries) except for the libraries and it still performs these checks. Thanks for any help.

I was installing is via a Slackware Package, but when I compiled it from source it worked fine.
