can't unpack mplayer codecs

I have tried about ten times to download and install the "essentials" codec package from mplayer.

Every time, I get a package that looks this:

essential-20050216.tar.bz2.bin

or like this:

essential-20050216.tar.bz2.tar

WTF is that extra ".bin" or ".tar" at the end? I can not get tar, or bzip2, to make any sense out of these files.

Are you downloading them using Mozilla? If so choose the "save link as" option.
