mplayer codecs

I'm a new linux user and i've tried installing mplayer. everything seems to have gone ok, but I've seen some of the other posts and realized that i didn't install the codecs. Is there a step by step way of doing this. I have no clue on how to do it and where to place them. I installed knoppix if that is useful.

go to mplayer's homepage at and to the download section..then scroll down a bit and download from the Codecs section either the "essential" pack or the other one (all). essential is smaller, but contains only the ones that are "needed"..all contains more.

after downloading, decompress the package with bunzip2 and you'll get a directory. move the contents of that directory into /usr/lib/win32/ (if there's no directory called win32 in /usr/lib, create one with mkdir /usr/lib/win32 ). after this just start mplayer and they should work..

Have you unmuted the mixer/sound? And an easier way to get the codecs in the future if needed is apt-get install w32codecs assuming you are getting the mplayer with this in your sources.list.

Oh and try just using mplayer in a console window and playing your media there the graphical player seems to not want to work with sound for me for some strange reason and you may want to check out kaffeine it works perfectly.

If you are running KDE desktop I have found that arts the kde sound deamon cases some problems with some applications.

I use the following "artsdsp - m" prior to application to ensure sound.

artsdsp -m /usr/games/armagetron

as an example
if i dont do the arstdsp -m no sound for armagetron.

debian sarge 2.6.7 kernel is my distor

hope this helps

hello again.

make sure there is no codec.conf file in the hidden directory of .mplayer in your users home directory.

check roots .mplayer files and make your users files the same.

copy /root/.mplayer/* /home/user/.mplayer
