'tar xvf' will do.

how about tar -zxvf ?
...
you don't need the "z" (gzip), "j" (bzip2), or "J" (xz) flags with newer versions of tar.
...
So now you can just do : 'tar xvf <archive>' with tar.gz and tar.bz2 .
why not just double click on the archive and let file-roller or ark ( archive manager)open it
or r-click on it and select "open with ..."
the SAME way one would on any windows or mac or ANY LINUX install with a gui

hello and thank you for the comments

well I saw no need to start a new thread 'cos for a while I thought it wouldn't be worth it and the problems seemed to be of the same sort. I just needed one or two comments to install firefox 6 and now I did successfully install it.

John VV I have looked up the install instructions already but (as it was the case when I was installing FF-3.x) there were no decent instructions for linux, or I was unable to find any but that's no big problem 'cos I see the Linux also as an experimentation and learning activity.

Here is how I have installed FF-6.0 on my Linux/Ubuntu 10.10 Lenovo N500 Laptop:

Code:
#cd directory-where-you've-downloaded-ff-6.0
#tar -jxvf firefox-6.0.tar.bz2
#mv firefox firefox-6.0
#cp -r firefox-6.0 /usr/lib/
#cp -r /usr/lib/firefox-3.6.16/plugins /usr/lib/firefox-6.0 (that's for libflashplayer.so)
On the desktop or taskbar where you keep the FF icon:

Quote:
Mouse right click >> Properties >> Command : /usr/lib/firefox-6.0/firefox %u
And here you go!

as for the
Code:
#tar -jxvf
well I had seen this usage on an old Linux manual and have been using it since then. j is for bz2 files. for gz files j becomes z, really so simple and no problem.

#cp -r /usr/lib/firefox-3.6.16/plugins /usr/lib/firefox-6.0 (that's for libflashplayer.so)
that is for the 32 bit ONLY
this thread is on the 64 bit

and the ff 3 plugins might not work in ff6
and the ff3 32 bit plugins will not work in ff6 64bit

Hello John VV,

I've forgotten to mention, the Laptop I was using was 64bits and all of the binaries including FF-3.6.16 binary and Flash Player (version 11.0.1.60) were 64bits too. Meanwhile, you had urged me to upgrade to the 64bits version of Flash Player in this post and it had worked like a piece of cake since then

Code:
romario-laptop% file /usr/lib/firefox-3.6.16/firefox-bin: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.15, stripped

romario-laptop% file /usr/lib/firefox-6.0/firefox-bin
/usr/lib/firefox-6.0/firefox-bin: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.9, stripped

romario-laptop% file /usr/lib/firefox-6.0/plugins/libflashplayer.so
/usr/lib/firefox-6.0/plugins/libflashplayer.so: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, stripped

I have been sticking to FF-3.x because FF-4.x and higher was incompatible to the Delicious extension, which was indispensable for me. And I noticed FF-6 was compatible with the delicious, that was good news.
