want to run java applets in firefox 3.6.17 - fedora 14

sounds easy but I've hit a dead end

The oracle site
Code:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/manual-plugin-install-linux-136395.html
tells me to go to the plugins folder under firefox. I look in /usr/lib/firefox-3.6 and I dont have a folder named plugins. But firefox does display a list of plugins from Tools>Addons>Plugins. The list displayed by the browser does not include java.

oracle tells me to make a link from this non existent folder to the jre and make a link to lib/i386/libnpjp2.so

I've done a find / and nowhere on the system is there a libnpjp2.so

there are a bunch of files similar to this in
Code:
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0/jre/lib/i386/
No doubt I'm confused - but I'm going in circles.

Can someone show me the straight and narrow?

Hi -

There are actually two, separate questions here:

Q1: How do I get Java applets to work in Firefox 3.6 on Fedora 14?
A1: Based on what you've said, you've *got* the right files, and it should "just work".
Q: Have you tried running an applet?
Q: If it fails, did you get an error message?

SUGGESTION: if it doesn't "just work", then please run this command:
[code]yum -y install java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin[/quote]

Q2: How the heck do plugins work in Firefox 3.6?
A1: Here's a good link on the subject:
http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/howdoi/how-do-i-install-plugins-for-firefox-in-linux/199

'Hope that helps .. PSM

Paul

once again to the rescue - thanks so much - yes it helped

I did the yum install of the plug-in and then the browser did not refuse to run an applet, but

the applet abended with a message - can't fine /root/.icedteaplugin/java.stderr

so I created one such file and then it ran just fine and the system created a companion file in that directory named java.stdout.

You are a great help

Dick
