Can't play VCD on Mandrake 10.0

Hi

I am using Mandrake 10.0 powerpack. I can't play vcds on both machines that I use under Linux. Totem and Xine gives an error message saying cant open. But the same vcds work under Windows on the same machines. Another thing is I cant copy the .dat files to the hd under Linux but if I copy then from Windows, I can play the .dat file from Linux. There seems to be a bug in a subsystem that is used to read the .dat from the CD. I have found several bugs in my distro. eg. cdrecord does not create vcds, linuxant drivers don't work. But I managed to get them working after downloading the rpms from the web. Does anybody know the rpm that is used to read the .dat from a vcd? If I know the rpm, I could get a more recent version from the web and try. I used to play vcds from my Mandrake 9.1 distro.

Thanks

Neranjana

OK I got Xine to play vcds by playing around with the rpms. Now I understand that .dat files in a vcd are not really files. It seems that Windows can copy them but Linux can't. So are there any VCD rippers for Linux? I think I saw rip vcd somewhere in a linux application but can't find it.

Thanks

Hi

I used auto update feature of Mandrake 10.0 and updated all packages which have xine in their names. So I don't know exactly which one had the problem. Some packages definitely have problems in the Mandrake 10.0 Powerpack commercial edition and Xine was one of them. By reading the package descriptions, I would say updating xine-ui and xine-plugins should do the job. The updated packages I have has 100 at the end of the name. eg. xine-plugins-1-0.rc3.6.3.100mdk and xine-ui-0.9.23-3.1.100mdk

Also I found that the application vcdxrip can rip the vcds to the hard drive. It has been there all the time right under my nose. Open your terminal and enter vcdxrip --help to get the options.
