SORTED: Can't login to Gnome - resetting X server

[SORTED - The problem is with Compiz, I guess I'lll need to upgrade it to the latest version!]

Unfortunately, I only discovered this problem after rebooting after changing a LOT of things. I created a new partition, copyed a load of files from an external drive to it, installed some new programs (Amarok and the KDE libs needed for it) via apt-get and ran apt-get upgrade.

The problem is that when I login, Gnome starts up with its splash screen, loads for a while, but then round about the time the splash screen would disapear, the display goes blank and I get put back at the login screen - it seems like the X server is resetting itself.

I was running XGL/Compiz so switched back to the standard X server but the problem continues. I have also tried XFCE and it does the same thing. I don't have KDE installed fully to try.

I looked in /var/log and the XGL and Xorg logs don't seem to report anything unusual. The gdm log also looks fine. I could be missing something however, as I don't really know what I'm looking for. I can't find a gnome log or anything like - not sure if one exists!

I am running Debian Sarge, fully updated as of last night, with the latest nvidia drivers and a 2.6.16 self-compiled kernel.

Many thanks for any help in solving this problem!

James

check /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "nVidia Corporation"

if it is "nvidia" -it is looking for the new driver...

less /var/log/Xorg.0.log |grep EE
less /var/log/xdm-errors.log
check them for info...
