I having trouble compiling gnapster, It wants to know my host type, I don't understand what it means or how to tell it? Any help is appreciated... oh yeah I'm new to compiling, I've been clinging to RPM's even since I switched to linux. Any help is appreciated.

Try running
./configure --help
and see what options you can pass to the configure script

Edit - I just downloaded it and running ./configure --help wasn't very enlightening, it just says --build=BUILD and doesn't suggest any options. You might try ./configure --build=linux or ./configure --build=gnu.
It just worked for me with no options. My first impressions of the program are not good, it looks pretty ugly, I would suggest you try Gtk-gnutella
Good luck
