Angry Caldera eDesktop 2.4 -- ATA100 Trouble

Ok, here's my question...

I am attempting to install eDesktop 2.4 on my machine (i have heard it is one of the easiest to use) I have a 3 gig ext2 partition and a 128 meg swap partition set up on my 30 gig maxtor 7200 HD, along with my 26 gigs of windows 98 space.
Every time i get to the point in the Lizard install where i have to choose the partitions, or hard drive to install on, EVERYTHING is blank... I am now assuming 2.4 does not have Ultra ATA100 support, which is the controller my Drive is in. Either that, or I just don't know how to initialize the support for that controller on bootup...

Now:
1) Has anyone else run into this problem and found a solution that is relatively simple () and wouldn't confuse me too much, or are all solutions to this problem complex?

2) If i were to plug my HD into the regular IDE controller, could i install the OS, then return it to it's ATA100 port and expect it to boot?? (I have BootMagic installed, but don't know if that counts for anything)

Any suggestions/links/other user experiences are REALLY appreciated... I spent close to a week downloading (going about 3.6kbps on my country phone line) this version, and i'd like to get it somewhat functioning, just to play around & learn a little more about this OS...

Thanks A Lot!!
mysd.

Sounds like the installer doesn't recognise your controller. You can move the disks onto a supported (non ata100) controller but you won't be able to move them back in the way you expect as your config files will be expecting to find your hard disk at /dev/hda and if you move it to an Ultra-ATA100 controller it'll typically be seen as /dev/hde hence Linux won't be very happy. There are ways around this but they're not newbie friendly. If you can live with slower disk access then I'd leave them on the supported controller until you get to know the system a little more, then have a go at moving it back to the ATA-100 controller once you know a little more and are more comfortable with your system. You might want to have a look at http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...&highlight=ATA also.

HTH

Install Successfull... VGA Problem Now

It would seem my never ending bad luck has once again kicked me in the ass...

Jamie: I followed your last suggestion, and rearranged my HD, to Primary Master IDE...

Now, during install this time, VGA detection came up with "unknown Nvidia 0x00000" or something like that. (i'm not sure what the address it gave was). I did not autoprobe (option in caldera installation to determine what video card is attached) because every time i did before, it would scramble my screen and i would have to restart the installation. I set the Refresh rate to max. 90, and the VideoRam to 32MB.
Now that it's installed, every time i attempt to boot into eDesktop, the screen is scrambled (the same thing it looked like when it autoprobed).
The bootup switch with the kernel loader, vga=# is set to 257, so it looks like vga=257 I don't know what this number represents, if it is the code for the "unknown nVidia" card i chose on install, or what, but is there any way i can change that number to a default vga setting??

(The card i have is a GeForce 2 MX 32MB tv-out, if that helps at all)

Anyway, i hope someone can fire some suggestions my way,
Thanks again,
mysd.

The number you are passing the kernel isn't for the graphics setup under X, if just controls the console font you get. You will need to find the tool that Caldera uses to configure X and run that (again) to tell it about your video card. Unfortunately I haven't got a clue what the command would be, never having use Caldera. You can always give XF86Setup or xf86config a try but I imagine there is a friendlier tool under Caldera.

Any Caldera users know this one?

cheers

Jamie...
