Boot failed: please change disk and press a key to continue

I receive the following error when attempting to install RH 7.2 on a system with only one IDE channel using the installation boot disk:

Boot failed: please change disk and press a key to continue

I have also tried running autoboot on the cd but that fails with a Kernal Panic error.

I have created 4 boot floppies using rawrite and dd (these boot other systems no problem and and running autoboot in the cd works fine on other systems).

I have replaced memory, hard drive, cdrom, floppy drive and removed all unnecessary cards! Still receive the same error.

I have installed Windows 98, ME and 2000 as a test to see if it was a problem with ramdisk during boot disk setup, but they all installed with no problem.

What is the Linux boot disk doing at the following point of failure?

boot:
Loading initrd.img.......
Loadin vmlinuz........

I have created the boot disk specifying block size of 512k and 1440k but still does not work!

Could it be the ramdisk action failing?

Any insight would be helpful, thank you

Could you try the cd on a different machine? It might be something wrong with the cd...

A few comments: most likely the floppy is bad. Mara's advice is good - try using it on other machines. More importantly though, is there a compelling reason to stick with RH 7.2? RH 8 (or even 9) has numerous improvements over 7.2, and it might be worth upgrading -- J.W.

You might try changing the CD-Rom cable. Boot from d should work regaurdless. If it worked in another system I would have to suspect that you have something malconfigued with the system. I would say upgrade to RH 9 but I am a Drake guy.
