best setting for aterm

i was wondering if any one knows the best setting for aterm so that when aterm is set to be transparent and the background is dark ( say, black ), the text is a bright, easy to read colour ( say, white ). i've tried fooling around with all the -txttype options but i'm not really sure what they do ( xor, andReverse, etc )

any suggestions? or should i save transparency for making all my windoze-using freinds jelous?

well for something like this, i am not sure why you wouldn't just play with the settings, but in any case, this is what i use to execute aterm, if you wanna start off by playing with that ..

aterm -bg black -fg white -tr -trsb -pr red +sb +ls -sh 80 -g 85x40 -fn "-schumacher-clean-medium-r-normal--15-150-75-75-c-90-iso646.1991-irv" -cr yellow

p.s. thats all one line, not two lines ...

DrOzz, you really need to start using the .Xdefaults file to host your aterm options, that's a horribly long command line!

If you don't have an ~/.Xdefaults file already, create it. Then type man aterm to have a look at the options and transfer them to resource names:
Code:
aterm*background: black
aterm*foreground: white
aterm*transparent: true
aterm*transpscrollbar: true
aterm*pointerColor: red
aterm*scrollBar: true
aterm*loginShell: true
aterm*shading: 80
aterm*geometry: 85x40
aterm*font: -schumacher-clean-medium-r-normal--15-150-75-75-c-90-iso646.1991-irv
aterm*cursorColor: yellow
It could of course be wise to leave out the options you might not want to have all the time, like the geometry part, and instead specify that on the command line or in the menu launchers where it should be other than the default.

i have used settings like that in my .Xdefaults in school, but the way i looked at is was, either way its going to be alot of typing to configure it the way i wanted, and secondly i only have to type it once .... because that command i showed above, is in my ~/.fluxbox/menu file ... so its not really a big issue, so whenever i set fluxbox up, that is when i setup that command .. again i only typed it in that menu file, so all i do is select aterm from my flux menu to use it .. never having to type that again

and thats it, i never need to think of it nor type it more than the original time (once) ;-)
so thanks for your concern, and your sample config, but i don't think i will be needing it.
cheers!

i know how to set defaults and all that... it's just that i don't want to specify a font color.
i like the wallpapers i use, but some of them tend to be a wide variety of colours, so when i try setting the font color, it messes things up because i can't always see what i'm typing...

so is there any one good setting for -txttype (like xor, invert, or andInverted )that will reverse background/font color so i can read my text, or should i just not use the transparent background?

k i did that but when is start aterm its still not transparent, borderless, in a world cool. now i really wanna get aterm transparent (looking cool)
all i did really though was make the .Xdefaults file in my home directory and type in the aterm* poperties similar to what you got there, didn't change the font. i don't understand wat you mean by transfering the options from the man aterm commands to resource names,

please help

1. Is your copy of aterm compiled with transparency support?
2. How do you set your wallpaper? You need to use something like Esetroot or fbsetroot. If you use Gnome, Nautilus will set your background and that won't allow for aterm transparency.

Hi,
I'm trying to switch off bold fonts (the default bold font makes man pages really hard to read) in aterm and am not having any success. I tried specifiying a non-bold font with the option -fb and I also tried adding a line ~/.Xdefaults but neither approach does anything to the bold fonts. Any suggestions?

I have the same font that I use as the "normal" font as the bold font. This effectively does away with bold fonts:
Code:
aterm*font:-windows-proggy clean-medium-r-normal-*-*-80-*-*-c-*-iso8859-1
aterm*boldFont:-windows-proggy clean-medium-r-normal-*-*-80-*-*-c-*-iso8859-1
The font I use can be downloaded from proggyfonts.com - I recommend them to a lot of people and they seem to be popular. The PCF fonts do however lack the line and corner characters making some curses-based apps look a bit weird.

Yes that worked. I sheepishly admit that it was a typo that was holding me up. I had
Code:
aterm*font
and not
Code:
aterm*font:
I'll check out those fonts.
Thanks!
