I log into root and type in aterm so I can see what's scanning my ports or whatever
And I get this error message:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: no Protocol specified

What command are you trying to execute? Post the command with the arguments that you are using.

You need to have an X server running to use aterm. You can easily use the commands you want to in the terminal that you're in, or you can run startx and then aterm.

I think you've got something confused, or everything.... what's the difference?

aterm is a terminal emulator, it's just a way to interface with a command line. It doesn't do much other than allow you to type in commands that do other stuff. It won't give you any network information, you need another program to do that. Then maybe you can run that other program in aterm

Aw crap. I got confuzzled. What program tells you if someone's IP is scanning your ports or something?

Also, when I start up Torsmo, I get all these blocks instead of letters/numbers. How can I fix that.

You can check current connections with netstat or you could make sure iptables is set up properly or use a graphical frontend like Firestarter to configure iptables and check it's logs every now and then.

Not off the top of my head, but checking the man page is something I'd do to find out.
