Unhappy Bash Login Issue on openSuSE 10.2

Hie there,

I'm failing to login into mu machine via the GUI. If i try to log using the GUI the login process seems to freeze.

I logged in via the console and after telling me to have fun if froze again. I think (i hope I'm correct) that this is some bug in bash because there appears to be a some inifinite looping. I pressed Ctrl+C and got:
Quote:
-bash-3.1#
i typed bash and got:
Quote:
sipatha:~ #
this the default i used to get before the problem. I then typed
Quote:
startx
However I'm having to do this every time i login

Any help will be welcome. someone hinted sax2, is this linked? How would i solve it.

Thanks in advance

Spt

Examine file /etc/inittab. If you see this:
Quote:
# The default runlevel is defined here
id:3:initdefault:
Then the default is to boot into runlevel 3 (text mode). Change it to this:
Quote:
# The default runlevel is defined here
id:5:initdefault:
to boot into runlevel 5 (GUI mode).

Thanks for the reply, but it was not an issue of the runlevels. Apparently when i tried:
Quote:
source /etc/profile
so that i could rule out bash. It again froze, i had to press Ctrl+C. I checked on another openSuSE 10.2 box (exact replica) and saw that my machine had a profile.local file in /etc, i moved it to a different location /tmp and ran
Quote:
source /etc/profile
again and this time it did not freeze.

I have since rebooted the machine and logged via the GUI (no console login first). I'm still not sure why my machine had the profile.local file and the other box didn't. Any ideas of how this happened would be appreciated.

Rgds
