backup with dd hangs with cryptic err

I am trying to make a backup of a otherwise good seagate HTFS (SCO unix) harddrive using the command

dd if=/dev/sda of=/mnt/backup/operating_terminal2.img

I am using Redhat 8.0
PIII 450, 128 meg ram
6.4 GB IDE Harddrive
Adaptec 2940UW LVD scsi card
seagate ST39216W 9.2 GB 68 pin harddrive
Ext Harddrive 160GB ACComData USB harddrive vfat

The Redhat is running on the 6.4 GB ide Harddrive
The USB 160 GB HD is seen as /dev/sdb and mounted as vfat on /mnt/backup.
The Seagate 9.2GB is not mounted but is seen as /dev/sda.

The error after 1.1 GB being copied is:

info fld=0x2211b8, Current sd 08:00 Sense Key Medium Error
Additional Sense indicated Unrecoverable read error
I/O error: dev 08:00, sector 2232760

The seagate Harddrive I am trying to copy runs just fine in its native
Dell operating terminal Help.

Just a shot in the dark, but maybe the native
thing works fine because the filesystem keeps
track of the bad blocks (marks them as unusable),
but dd (accessing the raw-device) doesn't benfit
from that information? In other words, there might
be a bad sector after all?

Cheers,
Tink
