"automounting blues"

Hi,

I'm trying to get automounting to work in a sane way. What I want is to be able to use a file manager like unixtree or even xfe and access my removeable media then press the eject button take the disk out transparently. Basically like windows. So i am trying autofs seems like the most accepted. Personally I like the way supermount looks, but I can't find a patch for a recent kernel. So heres what i set up for my auto.master file

/media /etc/auto.misc

Then I set up my auto.misc file like so:

cdrom1 -fstype=auto :/dev/hdb
floppy -fstype=auto :/dev/fd0

I rebooted the boot script did its magic all seemed good
I issue the commands

# cd /media/floppy
/media/floppy # ls
killa deal foo
/media/floppy # cd ../cdrom1
/media/cdrom1 # ls
killa deal foo
/media/cdrom1

I was stoked cause i figured it would be more trouble. I tried to eject the cd won't let me, well that sucks.
I change /etc/auto.master to this

/media /etc/auto.misc --timeout=3

restarted the automounter and nothing works I take away the timeout line it works. can someone help me give suggestions on how to inegrate this into my system.

default timeout is pretty sane IMO. Use it a while first before trying to change that.

Hi,

I figured it out I have the autofs scripts setup now so automounter params are set in the file /etc/sysconfig/autofs. I also set the --ghost option, and with a --timeout=3 it
operates in a very sane manner for removable media. My next step is to find a way to make the cdrw deal more sane. It takes awhile for it to mount, and I wish I could find a way to have a mount unmount button for regular users. Help me if you can.
thanks
