some 3d games have double game speed

I have noticed that in some games I play in Linux the game speed has become twice a normal speed.

For instance, with Cedega and Half-Life 2, the game speed is so fast that when characters speak, their lines overlap each other and they start another thing before finishing another. Not to mention their animations are about twice the usual speed. Changing the game speed within via the developer console does nothing.

And with the Linux UT2004 demo, the speeds are also off. All across the game, not just when their are 3d things visible, like on the startup menu. The banner at the top zooms across and the characters change about 2 a second (as opposed to about 1 in 3 seconds).

But the distortion is not visible with all games, for instance with Planet Penguin Racer the speeds are perfect. And in Armagetron and Super Tux they're fine too.

Also, if it matters, rendering of video in Xine is fine.

I'm running Kanotix 2005-03 (HD install) with Xorg. As stated in the title, I have a Mobility Radeon 9000. glxinfo sez:

However I don't think it's specifically to do with the graphics card, as when I change to software rendering in UT2004 the game speed is still crazy. The 'setspeed' command (which, yup, you guessed it, changes game speed) doesn't work either.

Any help is much appreciated.

edit: I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.12-kanotix-1from 2.6.11-kanotix-11 and that didn't help.

Hmm, the problem appears to be with the cpu stepping - when it changes the games don't realize it and continue using a different clock speed...or something. But when I manually set the CPU speed to its maximum using cpufreq-utils and tried playing all was fine.
