artsd explosion

I have a fresh install of KDE on my AMD64 machine.

I am using OSS and have it set to thread in the control center

My system slows, and when I run 'ps -A' I have dozens of instances of artsd running?

My understanding is that while artsd is not necessary it is desriable, how do I run it without letting it get out of control?
