Artsd :p
I must disable artsd to get sound with any applications...actually they all work quite well without artsd, but I would like to keep the system sounds. This is a Mandy Dolphin install on my sons computer for gaming (I use slack and don't have the problem with a similar setup). Anyone have any suggestions for keeping artsd, or an alternate server to use that might be more compatible? It is sis ac97 onboard sound.

Well, I downloaded and istalled oss...an idea I got from reading others posts...and it solves the problem...but it is not public and it galls me to have to install pay-ware in an otherwise free system. Any alternatives are still appriciated.

Which programs do not work with arts?
For some programs like xmms there are arts plugins. Others can be started with
artsdsp programname
(a sort of sound redirection) and in others like licq you can replace the play command by artsplay.

Actually, absolutely nothing was working, sound-wise, but system sounds unless I killed artsd. Now everything is working with oss instead of alsa. Still have a little out of synch audio problem with Xine, but Im working on that. I have seen a lot of complaints about this on the Mandrake forum, perhaps it is distro specific. Don't have the problem with slackware.

Out of sych audio was fixed by slecting "full duplex" and "Threaded oss" in the sound server settings. Not sure why...
Still using arts, alsa was the problem.
