Unhappy Argh! GAIM Install Nightmare

I'm trying to install the latest version of GAIM on Redhat 8.0.
Maybe this is my problem? The current version is not compatable?

I dowloaded autopackage and it says the gtk toolkit is not installed but it is. Just to be sure I dl'ed the current version of gtk and tried to compile/install it, but that showed I needed atk, pango, and glib 2.4 or higher. So...dl'ed them and compiled some, but not all (pango gave errors during make).

I dl'ed the tarball of Gaim and tried that but same errors.
Does anyone know of a step by step process for Redhat?

I have used a ton of hard drive space for these and I don't know which libraries are being used, i have like 4 gtk's and 3 glib's and atk's.

Can anyone help?

You will need to dump Redhat 8.0, sorry. It's so old and unsupported that it's not even funny. You will need to upgrade so many libraries and dependencies and what not to get new applications to run. Get something like Fedora if you like the Redhat line.

Yes, that is the problem. Autopackage is saying it can't find GTK+ because the version you have is too old. Actually .... this is an interesting report because autopackage should explicitly state your version of GTK+ is too old, not tell you it's missing. I wonder if we have a regression.

Why are you using such an old distribution? Where did you get it from? Incidentally, Gaim is included in Red Hat 8, look under "Internet -> Instant Messenger".

Hi,
I got Redhat 8.0 back when it came out mainly to host a MUD and chat and to fight the MAN, and have used it ever since.

Gaim is on RH 8.0 but doesn't have the protocol's like Yahoo I need. I tried upgrading and thats what started all of this
