any vlc experts out there?

I am using Ubuntu 8.0.4, and have been working for two weeks trying to get transcoding from live capture devices to .wmv format that wmp can play. Often, I get the following error, or similar errors:

ffmpeg error: cannot find encoder MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3
stream_out_transcode error: cannot find encoder ((null))
main debug: removing module "mpeg_audio"
stream_out_transcode error: cannot create audio chain
main error: cannot create packetizer output (mpga)

This is just the latest error. I have tried using an "ASF" container, with wmv2 video codec, and mp3 audio codec, but get the same kind of error with ffmpeg.

I am able to use ffmpeg to covert files via the command line from avi to wmv format just fine, but no luck with vlc.

Ultimately, I need to do a live capture, stream it, and archive it so wmp can view the stream and play the archive.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

I am currently using Ubuntu 8.0.4 with vlc 0.8.6e

Raymond

1. omfg, use a more descriptive topic title. don't explain what you need, explain your problem. if you'd know what you'd need, then you wouldn't need to ask anything.
2. did you compile vlc manually? if so, you didn't supply the right flags to ./configure.

vlc ffmpeg error continued

I am running a new install of Ubuntu 8.0.4. VLC was installed via apt.

I tried to install VLC via src on another box, using what I believed were the right flags to correct the ffmpeg problem. It would be a great help if someone could post the proper flags for ./configure that would eliminate the errors I described in my original post.
