Any SDL games on Linux?

Hi LQ-Friends,

I have at home several cdroms for XP which are only dedicated for gaming on the Window desktop. They haven't great 3d graphics. The cdroms feature a desktop games for windows XP. There are cards games, 2D games,...

I could find only few games on Linux, which are not 3D with OpenGL. For instance, I could find Supertux2, which is programmed on SDL.

1) Which desktop games are available from the Debian repositories by default?

2) Why programmers do not programme any longer any 2D SDL games? Why 3D high-graphical OpenGL are today all the newly developed. Those games are mostly boring, compared to 2D games.

3) Many persons in retirements still play simple games for the Windows desktop still today.

Example of great cdrom pack:

SDL is used for managing the Window & events in some games and they also use OpenGL for rendering like ioquake3. There are SFML games: http://www.indiedb.com/engines/sfml/games

Uh, no. There are no SDL games on Linux.

Anyway...

Seriously? One thing a lot of people have noticed is that 2D games are overrepresented on Linux.

Off the top of my head, I'd recommend going to Steam and at least looking into:
  • Shovel Knight
  • Hollow Knight
  • Owlboy
  • Axiom Verge
  • Hyper Light Drifter
  • Crypt of the Necrodancer
  • Salt and Sanctuary
  • Darkest Dungeon
  • Milkmaid of the Milky Way
  • Darkside Detective
  • Thimbleweed Park
  • Blue Revolver
  • Aquaria
  • Kingdom Rush
  • Doki Doki Literature Club
  • Towerfall Ascension
  • Stardew Valley

I agree that 2D games are fun.

BTW... if you mean what I mean by "desktop games" (i.e. like Minesweeper), then those are not SDL games. SDL games tend to run full-screen by default.

Hi, Thank you anyhow! I checked each game from the list.

Some of them aren't for Linux (yet) and some are for NintendoSwitch. It is indeed a bit depressing, concerning 2D gaming on Linux. With time, there will be more games on Linux.

As every game on the list was available for Linux when I posted, I'm actually quite curious as to where and how you were "checking".

Go to this website:

http://store.steampowered.com/

Check there.

The only one that doesn't show up there as being for Linux is Doki Doki Literature Club. For that game, you check on this website:

https://itch.io/

I look at the game images (via google images) + I checked on youtube for most of them. If you give me a ftp login/pass or http, I can give you the images/screenshots.

The opinion about Steam is here mentioned: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/nonfree-games.en.html

And GZDoom combined with Freedoom, if you're fine with 2.5D.

So use the software renderer that GZDoom includes now.

Actually, there is a plethora of games using Dosbox, but I wonder why Linux hasn't as much programmed on SDL?

example:

More games: http://www.zillions-of-games.com/games/
