Actually, there is a plethora of games using Dosbox, but I wonder why Linux hasn't as much programmed on SDL?

In my opinion, you underestimate the problem. C and C++ exist for Linux, right?
Problem is education. My opinion would rather be: most Linux project developments and Linux software's (except kernel) are made by programmers, that haven't solid programming education (PASCAL or C).
Just play those directly. You use WINE for XP games. I'm 100 percent sure that those will run perfectly.
Oh, and FYI... the reason the kinds of games you gave as examples aren't that common anymore (on platforms other than the web and phones) is because they're not the kinds of games that most people want to make or play these days.
