after systemd update won't boot (OpenSUSE 13)

OpenSUSE 13 system .. did yast2 online update of several packages including systemd. There was a message that the systemd update required a reboot but the system comes up to prompt for root password.

There is a lot of output from kjournald but I don't know what to look for in it.

I've tracked this down to a disk fault.
