adding a new user


when i try to add the user using the following command

useradd -g vip -s /bin/bash -p microsoft billgates

it adds but i am not able to login using the password microsoft

the man pages say that the pass must be encrypted using crypt but i dont know how to do that.

please help

I don't think thats how the -p switch works. Try just using -p and not typing the password, and it should ask you to type it in after you press enter (you won't see it as you type). Or you could just not have the -p switch at all and create the user, then type "passwd billgates" and it will ask you to enter the password twice, and that will set it.
