Unfortunately, starting acrobat from the command line does not produce an error code. The splash screen flashes on the monitor and then it's gone. But I learn that it is acroread7.
My distro installed a libstd package, libstdc++6-devel. Would this substitute for libstdc++-5?

The error message (not code) is usually printed on the terminal screen. You need to install libstdc++-5 (or libstdc++5, I can't remember the exact name) and not any other similar packages.
thanks, I'll look for the libstd++5 package in the morning.
As regards the error code, if I enter /usr/bin/acroread7 at the command prompt, the splash screen flashes and the command prompt goes promptly and cleanly to the next line. Except for the not unlikely possibility that I am looking in the wrong place, there doesn't seem to be an error code.
