Acrobat acroread doesn't do anything

I installed a Chinese IME, and set the environment variable LC_CTYPE="zh_CN". Then afterwards, acrobat acroread won't do anything. It simply quits without giving any errors. Has anyone seen this kind of problem before? BTW, i am using gentoo. How do I workaround?

I never tried to change this by hand (and never even thought about making my pc display anything in Chinese), but I think you should check:
-If the required fonts/xfonts/gsfonts are installed
-If you changed the right variable

ps: did you "set" and "export" LC_CTYPE or modify some config file?
pps: You can also try using gpdf/kpdf/xpdf or some other software instead of adobe acrobat reader

I think I have the fonts installed. I don't want my pc to display chinese either, only to type them when it is needed. I did a hack which seemed to be working - I added a line in the acroread script to set the local LC_CTYPE to nothing, and acroread runs... but I am hoping to find a more elegant solution.

is gpdf as good as acroread? For some reason, I found acroread looks the best on screen, and with all the functionalities as well.

i never tried to compare acroread and others.. but i remember that it is much easier to use and for sure DOES display better than xpdf... (whose purpose is probaby just to be able to view pdf's *on your hard disk* with a lightweight program?)
i don't even remember which one was installed on my pc
