Accessing X Window remotely

Is there a way to access X Window remotely even if the user is logged out of the session? I know VNC but I think you can only access it remotely if their is an active session/user is currently logged in. How come RealVNC works in Windows even if it is not logged in? How can I do the same with my Linux box? Thanks.

You can do it via VNC or remoting your X windows and you don't have to be logged in to the PC locally. When the VNC daemon starts it checks the ~/.vnc directory for each user that a session is configured for and provides a port that listens for connections (e.g. 3 users configured, listening on ports 5901, 5902 and 5903).

To use X remotely, I use an SSH connection and a local X server to display the apps locally. Even under windows, the cygwin X stuff lets me do this easily. I don't bother running something like KDE over the network, but individual apps work fine.

Which Linux distro do you want it to run under? It's usually much easier to install the packages rather than build and configure it from sources. If you want to build the latest stuff, have a look at http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...=400042&page=2 where some other people here have built and installed Xorg X11R7.0.

Getting it working under windows isn't too hard especially if you've already used something like cygwin. Just download the X bz2 files from a mirror and use the cygwin installer to add them to your system. There's a startup script provided for X which I've added to my startup folder. I also use SSH (with Putty) to encrypt the VNC connection back to the linux box.

Sorry that's all very generic advice, it's mostly because it's been a while since I've set it up fresh. It just keeps working, which is good...
