if you run the command in a terminal window, ie 'totem', and open a movie which has a problem, is there any useful output in the terminal window regarding this?

do you have mplayer? try using that if so

doesnt look like any of those errors seem to notice the sound isnt working. try another player like mplayer, it may already be installed.
