I compiled and installed Glibc2.2.4, Installation reported no probs
I stalled the Glide drivers, No problems
Dang it, I've installed everything but the kitchen sink (wait I did that too, but I didn't hook it up to the computer, though I wanna try that coffee thing in the how-to's ...)
I run 'XFree86 -configure' and everything comes back OK
but when I try to load X using the 'Xconfig.new' or whatever its called, All I get is a big 'X' cursor on a back and white cross hatched screen, and it hangs there....
I've been at this for a couple of days, I've downloaded probably over 100mb (I'm stuck with a 56k line, until I can afford DSL), My wife's pissed at me for sitting and cursing at the screen for hours, Can anyone give me a hand here, maybe a tip or trick that I haven't read, or something I might have missed?

i think you dont have a windowmanager configured to run when X starts. If you installed KDE try running startkde or kdm as root. If you dont have KDE installed try xdm as root (its a X login manager), or you should make a .xinit file in you home directory that contains a line exec fluxbox (and replace fluxbox with your window manager name, for example windowmaker)...
Hope that helps
you need to copy /root/XF86Config-4.new to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. the -configure option doesn't do it. that first test it has you seems to be just for you to determine that you have a screen and that your mouse works. if it does, then you need to copy the test file someplace useful. i tricked me pretty good too.
I got it working !
Thanx for all your help!
You were right startx booted the bugger up, and that comand line they give you just after you exec XFree86 -config is just a test, wish they would have said that in the docs. I do have a Windows Manager, I use Enlightened, is KDE better?

No, KDE is not better, it contains many viruses that can cause your processor to melt, and turn your hard drive in to erm.. jelly. yeah that'll do...
not that i'm biased... blackbox rules.
hmm.. seriosuly i guess tho.. kde is "windows" but on linux, as is gnome (but i think gnome is less insulting), whereas window maker and blackbox etc... are simply window mangers, which do much less, and men you system go faster, which i prefer. there's a thread around called 'why use a desktop environment' i think, which kinda discusses the differences.
After splunking around, it appears I have 3 installed on my system, Enlighten, KDE, and IceWM, I tried the other 2 for about, 15 minutes and went back to Enlighten.
I'll give Black Box/WindowMaker a shot, always looking to try something new.
