A quaint phenomenon about the MBR

I have two OS,Windows 2000 and ubuntu606.Yesterday I install anew 2000 because a certain problem which is no need to tell. After finish installing the 2000,reboot the computer,a quaint phenomenon happend. The windows 2000 didn't rewrite the MBR,so I can start the linux as usual.
I can't believe this, but how can that happen?

Can someone tell me why???

How many disks do you have? Are you installing Windows on a different disk to the one you're booting from is what I'm getting at.

Let's see output from
Code:
dd if=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1 | hexdump -C | less
(make it sda if appropriate).

It will print out the MBR so we can see which bootloader is installed.
