Question 3+ days to compile KDE? Even on an old computer?

I'm using the gentoo installer to emerge KDE from source, not using the binary package.

Code:
emerge -k kde
I started this process 3 days ago, and it is still going, I haven't seen any error messages, and g++ commands are still scrolling on the screen.

I am compiling with a 200Mhz MMX with 64Mb of ram, I realize this is ancient technology, but really, THREE DAYS, it seems quite extravagent.

My question is,

1) Does compiling usually take this long?
2) How long will it take on my machine?
3) Should I let it continue running in hopes of completion or stop it and try something else?

Thanks,
Colin

Try to look which package is compiled. Do the messages have sometimes kdebase, kdelibs or maybe kdegames etc? Full KDE is very big. I once compiled it on 366MHz machine (with 256MB RAM, sometimes KDE compilation used most of it...). It took 8+2+8+8h to get basic version.

Right now its running gcc with options that indicate that gnome support is being created, sounds like long compile times are commonplace.

Thanks,
Colin

Yikes!

And I was complaining when it took my 2.40 GHz Dell at work the entire afternoon to compile Gentoo 1.4!
No more complaints from me!!! Good luck with your install

On a computer with that kind of specs, that doesn't sound to far fetched.

I emerged KDE on a Ultra Sparc 10 and it took almost 2 days.
