xvidtune explanation

I set up xorg.conf with 4 possible video modes:
"640x480" "800x600" "1024x768" "1280x1024" with 3 depths 8, 16, and 24.
Normally I use 640x480, obviously. For the 1st time, I needed to use a higher resolution and discovered that when I used Ctrl_Alt_+ that I only had one level above 640x480 AND that once there Ctrl_Alt_- would not bring me back to 640x480 as it has before (prior to ver 12.0 of slackware).
I tried xvidtune -show and got:
"640x480" 54.0 640 688 744 900 480 480 482 500 +hsync +vsync
I presume this is telling me that I have 640x480, 688x480, 744x482, and 900x500 as mode options. I tried xvidtune -next then -prev but -prev did nothing. This is like the Ctrl_Alt_+/- problem.
Can someone validate my presumption and explain why these values differ from what is in xorg.conf? What is the 54.0 mean?
The man page does not explain this well. Also, why can I only get 2 of the 4 lower video modes?
Thanks

Any video mode you choose must also be supported by your video card and your monitor. So your table of possible video modes must also coincide with what the hardware is capable of doing. Your problems may be because your hardware is limited in the video modes that it supports.

What video modes do your video card and your monitor support?

The monitor documentation claims to handle 640x350or400or480, 800x600@72Hz, 1024x768@60Hz or70Hz or 75Hz,1280x1024@60Hz.
The video card permits a similar range. I have used this monitor and card on earlier versions with all 4 modes active.
Is that what you needed?
