I suggested "echo $USER" and "id -un" for debugging ... I'm surprised that they both worked the same, and they both correctly returned your username. I thought that one or the other would have failed, and that might have helped us understand the root cause of the problem.
A third (usually equivalent) command is "whoami" (all one word, lower case).
Q:
As a workaround, why not just use "echo $USER", "id -un" or "whoami" instead of "who am i"?
