who am i doesn't know who i am, when used with Hummingbird Exceed

There are times when I use the command "who am i" and it does not know who I am.

If I ssh into a server from another computer and I run the command "who am i", it knows who I am.
If I ssh into a server with Hummingbird Exceed I run who am i and it doesn't know who I am.

The server is running RHES 5.
The client is running WinXP and uses Hummingbird Exceed to run the X windows. This allows me to login to the server and have an xterm displayed back to my PC.

What sets the "who i am" info?
I'm guessing that what ever sets the "who i am" info, Exceed is somehow by passing that step.

thank you

A couple of suggestions:

Compare the values of "echo $USER" between direct login and Hummingbird

... and ...

Compare the values of "id -un" between direct login and Hummingbird

Tried both and everything matched. Both commands from both logins matched.
Everything came back with my username.

Hi, again -

I suggested "echo $USER" and "id -un" for debugging ... I'm surprised that they both worked the same, and they both correctly returned your username. I thought that one or the other would have failed, and that might have helped us understand the root cause of the problem.

A third (usually equivalent) command is "whoami" (all one word, lower case).

Q:
As a workaround, why not just use "echo $USER", "id -un" or "whoami" instead of "who am i"?
