Ubuntu 16.04 server lost software and history upon restart

Experiencing something new. Wondering what happened.

Have HP Proliant DL160 G5. Three hard drives: RAID1 and spare.

Updated Ubuntu. New kernel and other programs.
Installed LXDE to use in place of Unity. Logged out, logged in. LXDE was fine.

After reboot.
Kernel was 4.4.0-72-generic as expected.
LXDE was not available at the login prompt.
BASH and Firefox history for today were not there.

Installed updates again. Restart. Updates still there.
Installing LXDE again now.

Restarted server after trying LXDE again.
Had different login menu after bootup. LXDE one install of Unity. Did not have that before.

LXDE desktop fine. Infer some hiccup with new GUI backend installation.

If a reboot doesn't not resolve hiccups,
Code:
sudo apt-get install -f
is a simple diagnostic that is pretty good at letting you know what may need to be done on a system
after packages, or key elements of a system have been modified.

Just sayin'
