Are you saying that when the SSH connection (PuTTy) from a Windows XP computer is disconnected, that the whole Red Hat server SSH service dies? Or the SSH connection session that the Windows XP computer used won't die on the server?
I have many sshd defuncts at the evening. Then i can only reboot my server. Cose i cant kill that defuncts. :-(
When it server was work under SCO, i haven't this problem.
Note: 260 users every day use console progres soft in Putty.

Very odd behavior?
I don't really have a quick answer for you to fix your problem. If you haven't done it already, check your system logs for any possible clues, make sure your system has all latest software/security updates, and reinstall OpenSSH related software. You can also search/post the OpenSSH mailing list.
