sshd problem

Hi there, i'm having a problem with sshd. For some reason, it won't load. If i execute the command sshd as root, it executes, but there is no listing for it in ps. Before, I had a problem that the permissions on /dev/null had changed, but I fixed that. If this helps, the following shows up in auth.log whenever I try to execute sshd.

May 5 01:22:30 localhost sshd[4790]: fatal: daemon() failed: No such device

it would help if you provided more info about distro, version of ssh, whether it worked in the past etc...

and how/why you changed /dev/null........

As satined mentioned above it would help us a lot better if you told us what distro you are using, one thing is executing sshd and a different is starting it, which probably you have not done so.
for example in gentoo I run as root
/etc/init.d/sshd start
Then it generates all the necessary files and starts the daemon
